The scheme ‘Irrigation Census’ is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme with 100% Central Assistance to the States/UTs. The major activity under the scheme is the Census of Minor Irrigation (MI) Schemes conducted in the States/UTs with the objective of building a comprehensive and reliable database in the Minor Irrigation Sector for effective planning and policy making. Five MI Censuses have been conducted so far with reference years 1986-87, 1993-94, 2000-01, 2006-07 & 2013-14. The Census Reports throw light on the changing composition of the MI sector as well as the diversities in irrigation practices across the country. The scope of Irrigation Census has now been expanded to include Census of Water bodies also with 100% Central Assistance. Currently, the field work of 6th round of Minor Irrigation Census with reference year 2017-18 and the first Census of Water Bodies covering 33 States/UTs has been completed.
